Your keyword is ranked #1 - Is it time to celebrate?
You check Google for your primary keyword and you've finally made it to the top spot. Whilst the boss may be over the moon, and sure enough there's nowhere higher you can go, does it signal the end of the road for optimisation?
Certainly there can't be any harm in sitting back and enjoying the additional traffic. But there's so much more you can do with the traffic to help you boost revenue.
You can always improve on your landing page, regardless of whether your keyword is ranked at the top or not. In fact, it's even more important that your landing pages squeeze the most out of your visitors if you are not in the top spot because you're trying to do the best you can with less traffic.
We provide keyword ranking reports that can keep track of your primary keywords. Whilst there's no limit on the number of keywords we can track, at the same time you don't want to be sitting down going through hundreds of keywords each month. To strike a good balance, we recommend a top 20 but more importantly we monitor the growth in the actual number of unique keywords that are driving traffic to your website.
The reason why monitoring growth in the total number of unique keywords is important is because of a statistical property called The Long Tail. It's a very interesting concept and you can read all about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Tail. In short, the sum of all the smaller quantity (the tail) will outnumber the head. And to put this concept into SEO perspective, it's much tougher to improve rankings for the top terms (found at the head) than the tail terms.
Hopefully you can see why keyword rankings aren't everything, but we still do produce them to please the bosses!
